  • Summary:
    • Set in a small Iranian country town, Rafi Pitts’ adaptation of the novel by Mahmoud Dowlatabadi is a study of people at the bottom of the pile. Khatoun (Mitra Hadjar) lives with her young daughter, and waits for money from the husband who, jobless like so many others, has emigrated. Marhab (Ali Nicksolat) is a young, lively and rebellious mechanic who arrives in town looking for work. Seeing Khatoun one day he begins a low-key courtship and then news of Khatoun’s husband’s death arrives.
    • The players, all non-professionals, give solid, authentic performances as people whose only possibility of work and survival seems to be emigration. Through nuance and stunning photography of snowy winter landscapes, Pitts has crafted a delicate observation of lives, emotions and the ways men and women deal with hardship, elevating the realism of setting and performances to a poetic level.
